Overview

Chatham House’s Environment and Society Centre Beyond Energy Transition: How will industries be transformed? series aimed to enhance understanding of the interplay between the energy transition and its broader geopolitical implications.

The third in the series aimed to discuss how different countries are reacting to concerns over access to critical materials.

I raised three main points: 1. We should better internalise the environmental costs vs the previous fossil fuel based system; 2. Centre justice in the transition; 3. Reducing demand through the circular economy is by far the most powerful method of reducing social and environmental costs and securing supply chains.
